A drone as a learning tool. Sounds interesting, right?

The truth is that these pieces of technology have much more to offer besides taking impressive photos or assuring a good time outdoors.  Not so long ago, drones were introduced in classrooms to motivate and update young students in a very fun way.

In addition to learning to fly one of these babies, it is possible to develop technical skills at very competent levels. A drone as a didactic tool in technical schools and universities is able to contribute significantly to the innovative mindset and perception and the use of technology. Not only do they become skilled users of the technology with which they will coexist day by day, but also they may be able to find a significant motivation to get involved in the development of these technologies.

Here are five technical skills that can be learned from a drone at school:

  1. Make decisions based on requirements
    A drone for educational purposes facilitates the approach of young students towards the materials that are currently being used by the industry.  By understanding the capabilities of the hardware, it is possible to identify the core needs of a piece of technology; in other words, by knowing the materials, decisions can be made based on the specific needs of the equipment.  This ability allows you to logically identify the function and efficiency of the materials and components that make up any technology.
  2. Principles of control
    Undoubtedly, control represents one of the bases for those who are immersed in the world of multidisciplinary engineering, although you don’t necessarily have to be an engineer to understand its importance.  When you build a drone and program its functions, it goes without saying that you will be able to identify the control mechanisms implicit in its structure and operation. When students learn basic control principles, they are able to understand the mechanisms of automation, as well as dare to perform more complex mathematical calculations.
  3. Programming
    One of the best tools, which is required as a mandatory competence to face the challenges of the future, is the magnificent doctrine of programming.  There are different platforms or ways to execute this function, whether you’re proficient with one or a young learner. With an educational drone, students can experiment the freedom to use multiple languages to program a drone: Java, JavaScript, Python, C, C#.  In addition, this experience may represent a first contact with the programming world, so it’s possible to see at fist hand a real application of technology, put to work.
  4. Understand GPS location systems
    The Global Positioning System, GPS, is a system that allows the determination of the position of an object on Earth, which can be a person, a vehicle, a cell phone or a drone.   A drone will test your ability to read and understand this positioning system. Students will also discover more useful applications, motivated by your ingenuity and the desire to explore their environment.
  5. Envision opportunities in technology
    Last, but not least, with a drone you will have a complete understanding of a technology to use it in favor of your goals.  From the structure, programming, operation, and positioning of a drone, this will allow young minds to envision the unlimited possibilities to learn and develop technologies that can solve problems for themselves and for others. It may even be possible that you have managed to identify a great business opportunity.
